EAST HARTFORD, Connecticut - Brian Wake recently made Research Center history as the first UTRC employee to be elevated to the position of Technical Fellow by AHS International.
This honor is conferred only upon those within the American Helicopter Society (AHS) whose "career-based accomplishments significantly advance the interests of the vertical flight technical community," according to AHS International, also known as The Vertical Flight Technical Society.
Wake, UTRC Fellow, Advanced Aerodynamic and Aeroelastic Modeling, UTRC Manufacturing & Service Technologies Program Office -- and a 30-year veteran of UTRC -- was recognized for his many landmark contributions in this area during a special awards banquet hosted as part of AHS International's 73rd Annual Forum and Technology Display, Fort Worth, Texas.
He was one of four professionals to be awarded this distinction, a tribute typically reserved for less than 0.1 percent of the AHS International's technical membership (which currently numbers more than 6,000) each year. Wake joined AHS International in 1984.
"Brian's elevation to AHS International Technical Fellow represents a tremendous achievement… one that is well deserved and long overdue," said Jeff Mendoza, Sikorsky Customer Manager, UTRC. "He is viewed within the industry as a world-class authority in computational fluid dynamics and rotorcraft aeromechanics, and his expertise in aerodynamics has led to the development of numerous innovations in aircraft designs, technologies and analytical tools -- at UTC and its former Sikorsky business unit -- during the last few decades."
He added, "We are very proud of Brian and offer him our most sincere congratulations. This distinction proves the value and impact he has demonstrated so effectively throughout his career at the Research Center."
Earlier in his career, Wake's contributions focused primarily on computational fluid dynamics. During the past decade, however, he led numerous projects at UTRC advancing the state-of-the-art in active rotor control. These included several large-scale helicopter rotor demonstrations with Sikorsky Aircraft.
In addition to his latest recognition, Wake's professional awards and honors include American Institute of Aeronautics and Astronautics (AIAA) Associate Fellow, 2012; Collier Trophy Team Contributor (2010) for Sikorsky's X2 Technology Demonstrator; NASA Team Award, Experimental Replication of an Aeroengine Combustion Instability, 2003; and several UTRC Outstanding Achievement Awards.
Additionally, Wake is a Gold Circle member, AHS International, and served as an Associate Editor of the AHS Journal for seven years.
Wake holds 18 patents in the areas of aerodynamics, acoustics and active rotor control, and has been published in numerous journals and technical conference publications. He earned a Bachelor of Science degree in engineering science from the University of California, San Diego, California, and an Master of Science degree and Ph.D. in aerospace engineering from the Georgia Institute of Technology, Atlanta, Georgia.
