Surana honored with 2017 Grainger Foundation Frontiers of Engineering Grant

WASHINGTON, D.C. - Amit Surana has been awarded a $10,000 Grainger Foundation Frontiers of Engineering Grant for technology he is co-developing under contract with Amin Karbasi, Assistant Professor of Electrical Engineering & Computer Science, Yale University.

Surana is a Principal Engineer, System Dynamics, in UTRC's Systems Department.

The research grant, awarded at the National Academy of Engineering's (NAE) 2016 U.S. Frontiers of Engineering (FOE) Symposium, will enable Surana and Karbasi to design novel algorithms that will compress massive amounts of time-varying data in a video stream into significantly smaller image sets for faster processing.

Potential applications include surveillance video anomaly detection and activity classification.
